Final Screens *UPDATED*

Just because I’ve been playing a lot of retro games with my son, courtesy of the NES, SNES, and PlayStation Classics, here are some of my favorite final screens.

1. Castlevania III

2. Crystalis

3. Super Mario Bros. 2

4. Strider

5. Soulblazer

6. The Guardian Legend

7. Jackal

8. Contra III

9. Mega Man II

10. Quest for Glory I: So You Want to Be A Hero

11. Super Mario Land

12. Ninja Gaiden

13. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

14. Ghosts n’ Goblins

15. Final Fantasy IV

16. Metroid

17. Kid Icarus

18. Police Quest II

19. Secret of Mana

20. Dragon Warrior

Update: Some I forgot:

21. Earthbound

22. Battle of Olympus

23. Bionic Commando

24. Faxanadu

25. Blaster Master

26. Clash at Demonhead

27. Super Dodge Ball

28. Leisure Suit Larry 3

29. StarTropics

30. Rygar

31. Final Fantasy VII

32. Earthbound

I know some of these aren’t the final ending screens, but these are screens that hit the criteria on the good ending screen checklist:

  1. Memorable music
  2. Dramatic visuals
  3. A sense of closure
  4. If no sense of closure, poignant longing that still wraps up loose ends
  5. The guy getting the girl (where applicable)
  6. Some sort of surprise
  7. Engrish translations always a bonus

Basically, you want some kind of reward for all your time and hard work.

What are some of your favorites?

If you want something with a satisfying ending, you’d love my novel A Traitor to Dreams. Worthy of an Engrish-free NES-era end screen! And join the Amatopia mailing list for a free short story.

  1. All great choices. As I’ve been playing a ton of old NES games lately as well, I’ll have to take note of my favorites as I beat them (it’s been so damn long that I honestly can’t remember what a lot of them are like until my memory is jogged like with your post).
